About

The Marrow of Running

Born out of Brian Calavan's unique experience of running with Sitosterolemia while seeking to find purpose in life, The Marrow of Running is an attempt to get at the essence of the running life. Through the windows of philosophy, biology, sport, and personal experience, Brian seeks to shed light on what running actually is and what compels us to continue to run, even after experiencing its highest of highs and its lowest of lows. The Marrow of Running will serve as chronicle of Brian's journey toward the 2017 Boston Marathon; exposé of the rare and little understood disorder Sitosterolemia; pragmatic journal of the current technology of the sport; and musing on meaningful running.

Brian Calavan

Before he could even walk or talk, Brian crawled out of the house when an unsuspecting parent left the garage door open. He made it a quarter-mile down the road by himself before a neighbor found him distraught on the curb, picked him up, and drove him home. The rest of his life has been filled with similar endeavors.

After flying across the country with his now fiancée Teresa McWalters, Brian continued the competitive community running he experienced with North Brooklyn Runners to co-found with Teresa Redwood Runners of San Francisco. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 2007 with a B.A. in English with High Honors and a Minor in Creative Writing. He has worked as a test prep private tutor and classroom teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City from 2007 to present. He currently is the Academic Content Lead for edtech startup ScoreBeyond, developing test prep and tutoring material and methods for the future of education.
